BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. (Nasdaq: BMRN) announced today that the first patient has initiated treatment in the Phase 2 clinical study of PEG-PAL (PEGylated recombinant phenylalanine ammonia lyase) for the treatment of phenylketonuria (PKU). Initial top-line results are expected in mid-2010.
Levels of CoQ and the presence of insulin resistance were analyzed in a range of experimental laboratory settings, mouse models and samples from humans, as part of an ambitious research collaboration conducted with the University of Sydney, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Duke University School of Medicine, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Genentech Inc. and the University of New South Wales.
Globally, an estimated 1.9 billion adults and 380 million children are overweight or obese. According to the World Health Organization, more people are dying from being overweight than underweight. Researchers at Concordia are urging health authorities to rethink their approach to obesity.
According two studies in Africa, taking a daily pill containing either one or two anti-HIV drugs can reduce transmission of the virus by as much as three-quarters among heterosexual couples. This is an encouraging finding that could help focus on AIDS prevention. The results were so compelling that the larger study was halted early and the drugs given to all the participants, researchers said Wednesday.
Occlutech GmbH, the leading European developer of minimally invasive implants for the treatment of structural heart disease, today announced receiving a favourable appeal court ruling from The Hague, The Netherlands in the on-going patent litigation with AGA Medical. A favourable first instance court ruling obtained by Occlutech had been appealed by AGA in 2008.
