Elsevier announced today the winners of the Asian Young Women Researcher Awards, a joint development between its flagship product Scopus(R), the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and the Third World Organisation for Women in Science (TWOWS) and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world.
Having a health clinic in the apartment next door may not be everyone's idea of a good neighbor. But a new study shows that such a clinic can be much more effective than a traditional one in improving African American's heart health.
Based on the pioneering work of Dr. Claire Lugassy and Dr. Raymond Barnhill at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, a new study provides additional support for a process by which melanoma cells, a deadly form of skin cancer, can spread throughout the body by creeping like tiny spiders along the outside of blood vessels without ever entering the blood stream, and that this process is exacerbated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.
Research published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology has found that an individual's quality of life prior to treatment can help predict the overall survival of patients with advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
In a country that leads in infant mortality rates, the Bayat Foundation inaugurated the construction of a maternity hospital in a ceremony with local officials. Named "Gawhartaj Bayat", this much needed facility will accommodate space for 20 beds, a pharmacy, laboratory, and include modern equipment. The project is scheduled to be complete and open for care by October 1, 2010 in Gardez, the capital of the southeast province of Paktia in Afghanistan.
