While investigating how the hormone orexin might control sleep and hunger, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered, to their surprise, that it activates a protein, HIF-1, long known to stimulate cancerous tumor growth.
"The BBC has done an extensive (40 minute) report on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation titled 'Fortress Bill,'" which "is available for four more days online and will be rebroadcast on Sunday, Jan. 8," KPLU 88.5's "Humanosphere" blog reports.
A new study of 9- and 10-year-olds finds that those who are more aerobically fit have more fibrous and compact white-matter tracts in the brain than their peers who are less fit. "White matter" describes the bundles of axons that carry nerve signals from one brain region to another. More compact white matter is associated with faster and more efficient nerve activity.
Synageva BioPharma Corp., a privately held biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutic products for rare disorders, and Trimeris, Inc., announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Synageva will merge with Trimeris in an all-stock transaction.
