Cancer Reserach UK experts are predicting that lung cancer rates will drop by nearly a fifth over the next 20 years, according to new figures.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating condition affecting 11 million individuals in the US alone. FM carries an annual direct cost for care of more than $20 billion and drug therapies are generally only 30% effective in relieving symptoms and 20% effective in improving function. Standard care currently includes medications accompanied by exercise and coping skills approaches. In a study published in the November 2010 issue of PAIN, researchers report patients participating in a "Yoga of Awareness" program showed significantly greater improvement in FM symptoms and functioning compared to patients on a standard FM care program.
Tommy John surgery, or reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow, has been dubbed an epidemic among Major League Baseball pitchers.
A new treatment increases survival to almost 70 per cent for children whose acute lymphoblastic leukaemia returns, according to the results of a trial published online in the Lancet today (Saturday).
Death plays a big role in keeping things alive. Consider the tightly orchestrated suicide of cells-a phenomenon essential to everything from shaping an embryo to keeping it free of cancer later in life. When cells refuse to die, and instead multiply uncontrollably, they become what we call tumors. An intricate circuitry of biochemical reactions inside cells coordinates their self-sacrifice. Tracing that circuitry is, naturally, an important part of cancer research.
