African American adults are less likely than Whites to get an annual flu shot (39% vs. 47%), and public health efforts to address this racial disparity have had little impact on increasing vaccination rates to date.
Treating people with advanced metastatic kidney cancer using a combination of the immunotherapy drugs nivolumab (Opdivo) and ipilimumab (Yervoy) significantly increased overall survival versus treatment with sunitinib (Sutent) alone, according to new findings from researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center that were reported today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
It is not only about relatively minor gastrointestinal illnesses like self-limiting diarrhea. In particular among persons from risk groups (small children, expectant mothers, very old people or people whose immune system has been weakened by previous illness), a food-borne infection can also be severe, cause lasting damage and even prove fatal under certain circumstances.
A mathematical model suggests that aggressively pursuing low blood pressure and cholesterol levels may not benefit, and could even harm, some patients with diabetes, according to a report in the June 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
