Shield Therapeutics, an independent specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development of mineral-derived hospital pharmaceuticals, today announces that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its Investigational New Drug application to initiate a Phase 3 pivotal study of ST10, its novel oral iron-replacement therapy, for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease. The Company plans to initiate the Phase 3 study in the US in H1 2014 and positive data would be the cornerstone of a subsequent NDA submission.
People with learning (intellectual) disabilities have historically been marginalised from mainstream society, and have had limited choice and control over their lives. Research scientists have developed a novel method to re-create brain and intestinal stem cells from patients who died decades ago, using DNA from stored blood samples to study the potential causes of debilitating illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease.
"A plan by the University of California, Berkeley to voluntarily test the DNA of incoming freshman has come under fire from critics who said the school was pushing an unproven technology on impressionable students. The university has said it will send test kits to 5,500 new students to analyze genes that help control the body's responses to alcohol, dairy products and folic acid" (Wohlsen, 5/21).
