NiTi™ Surgical Solutions, an innovative surgical device company, today announced that its ColonRing™, the first major advance in closure for gastrointestinal surgery in more than 30 years, has been used for the first time in a colorectal surgery in China. The ColonRing anastomosis device was launched in the United States in May 2008 and has been successfully applied in thousands of patients.
After evacuating more than 1,000 patients, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, and the north and south campuses of Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) have received state Department of Health (DOH) approval to begin accepting inpatients on Sunday evening.
In recent years, researchers have firmly established that gene mutations appearing for the first time, called de novo mutations, contribute to approximately one-third of cases of autism spectrum disorder.
A new drug to treat hepatitis C that costs $1,000 a pill has caused rising concern among insurers and state Medicaid programs. It has now also spurred interest from Democratic congressmen whose queries about the drug prompted a sell-off in biotechnology stocks on Friday. Three Democratic members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee have demanded that Gilead Sciences, the developer, justify the price of its drug, which is called Sovaldi (Pollack, 3/21).
