Central nervous system infections develop infrequently following heart transplants but are a significant predictor of death, according to an article posted online today that will appear in the December 2007 print issue of Archives of Neurology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine have found that particular strains of a food-borne bacteria are able to invade the heart, leading to serious and difficult-to-treat heart infections.
"The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria said in a statement Thursday that its board had terminated the employment of Inspector General John Parsons 'after a careful review of his performance, which was found to be unsatisfactory,'" the Associated Press reports.
After working to ensure the U.S. had access to enough H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine, health officials may now face a new dilemma - a vaccine surplus, the Associated Press reports.
