Researchers have found a way to reduce organ rejection following a transplant by using a special polymer to coat blood vessels on the organ to be transplanted.
Professor Robert Edwards who came to be known as the "father of In Vitro fertilization" (IVF) has won this year's Nobel prize in medicine. He is 85 and has won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his pioneering work on the in vitro fertilisation of human eggs that led to the birth of the world's first IVF baby, Louise Brown, in 1978. When he had started off initially his funding request for IVF research was turned down by Britain's Medical Research Council (MRC) in the 1970s. His co-worker the gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe, died in 1988. Professor Edwards becomes the sole recipient of this award since it cannot be awarded posthumously.
Researchers from Karolinska Institutet and Kancera AB have developed a molecule that makes cancer cells sensitive to radiotherapy. In a study published in Nature Communications, the researchers describe a new way to block cancer cells' ability to repair their DNA and thus stop the survival of cancer cells.
The number of retail health clinics in the United States is growing steadily, thanks to drug store chains, according to Kalorama Information. In recent years, as a result of the economic downturn, retail clinic growth had been at a standstill, but 2013-14 was a year of opportunities, as the number of retail clinics reached nearly 1,600 according to the healthcare market researcher's report, Retail Clinics Market Overview and 2014 Consumer Survey Results.
