A novel statistical approach to analyzing patients with epilepsy has revealed details about their brains' internal networks. The findings may lead to better understanding and treatment of the disease, according to Rice University researchers.
Laura Moore, M.Ed., R.D., L.D., and her husband Don Sanders have donated $1 million to support a first-of-its-kind nutrition education program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
All tissues, sick and healthy alike, need a blood supply to survive and grow. The key to many medical problems, like preventing tumour development, is therefore to obstruct the spread of the blood vessels. Research scientists at Karolinska Institutet have now discovered a heretofore unknown mechanism for how the body links together its blood vessels.
If a patient is no longer able to communicate personally how he or she would like to be treated, doctors and relatives consult an advance directive, if one is available. However, doctors and relatives often interpret patients' written wishes in different ways, as Nadja Leder et al. establish in their original article in the current issue of Deutsches Ärzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztbl Int 112: 723-9).
