Research from the University of Illinois at Chicago has found that some of the genes affected by alcohol and inflammation are also implicated in processes that clear amyloid beta - the protein that forms globs of plaques in the brain and which contributes to neuronal damage and the cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's disease.
The suicide rate for people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) is 170 times higher than the general population according a study just published in the journal Schizophrenia Research, a figure the authors call "tragically high."
The review, entitled "Combining biologic and phototherapy treatments for psoriasis: safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability," was carried out by a group of researchers in the USA.
In the case of low-risk treated thyroid cancer, some patients may be insisting on unduly intensive surveillance in the form of diagnostic scans to detect recurrence, without clear evidence for any benefit from the same, says a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
New research from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine reveals a high value of scans which could lead to future change of reimbursement policies for follow-up positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) studies in lung cancer. The study, featured in the February 2015 issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, establishes the value of fourth and subsequent follow-up PET/CT scans in clinical assessment and management change in patients with the disease.
