Researchers have found a relationship between emphysema and serum vitamin D levels, suggesting that the vitamin may play a role in modulating lung structure.
For women smokers worried about their weight, combining cognitive behavioral therapy addressing weight concerns with the medication bupropion appears more effective than counseling alone to help them quit smoking, according to a report in the March 22 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
Independent investigators reported today that patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria who were treated long-term with Soliris (eculizumab) achieved survival comparable to that of an age- and gender-matched normal population. Findings from this investigator-led analysis were reported in an oral presentation today at the 52nd American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando.
Patients who participate in clinical trials expect that their personal information will remain confidential, but a recent study led by Dr. Khaled El-Emam, Canada Research Chair in Electronic Health Information at the CHEO Research Institute, found that the security practices used to transfer and share sensitive files were inadequate.
One of the panel sessions at the ‘Mercury 2013' International Conference in Edinburgh (28th July – 2nd Aug) "will be highly contentious and should result in a heated debate," says Prof. K. Clive Thompson who will be chairing the session with Eric Uram from SafeMinds.
