It is the first study to show that soft drinks and carbohydrates in childhood are linked to narrower retinal vessels.
In a study published on line this week in the journal Human Molecular Genetics, Drs. Donita Garland, Rosario Fernandez-Godino, and Eric Pierce of the Ocular Genomics Institute at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, along with their colleagues, reported the unexpected finding that in mice genetically engineered to have an inherited form of macular degeneration, turning off the animals' complement system, a part of the immune system, prevented the disease.
Ambulatory systolic blood pressure in the early hours of the morning is predictive of asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis, the results of a cross-sectional study in China suggest.
Poor diet, too much alcohol, smoking and increasing obesity could be leading to an epidemic of oesophageal and upper stomach cancer, according to a leading UK team of specialists at The University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals.
