Anavex Life Sciences Corp. ("Anavex") (OTCBB: AVXL) today commented on new diagnostic criteria and guidelines for Alzheimer's disease published recently by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Alzheimer's Association, which have been updated for the first time in more than 25 years. The new guidelines discuss the importance of new technologies, including brain imaging and biomarker analysis, in research and clinical diagnosis. They describe Alzheimer's disease at a preclinical stage, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's disease, and dementia due to Alzheimer's pathology.
Extra-hard coatings made from diamond-like carbon (DLC) extend the operating lifetime of tools and components. In artificial joints, however, these coatings often fail because they detach. Empa researchers found out why - and developed methods to both make the interface between the DLC layer and the metal underneath corrosion-resistant and to predict the lifetime of the implants.
A team of scientists at the Children's Research Institute at UT Southwestern has become the first to use a tissue-clearing technique to localize a rare stem cell population, in the process cracking open a black box containing detailed information about where blood-forming stem cells are located and how they are maintained.
The IRS hasn't officially weighed in. Neither has Congress. But it looks as if most — if not all — of the annual retainers people are paying for special attention from their doctors is not reimbursable under flexible spending accounts.
