A team of scientists at the University of California, Davis and the University of Auckland has discovered that neuroglobin may protect against Alzheimer's disease by preventing brain neurons from dying in response to natural stress. The team published the results of their study in the April, 2010 issue of Apoptosis.
Akorn, Inc., a niche generic pharmaceutical company, today reported that its Akorn-Strides LLC joint venture has entered into a purchase agreement with Pfizer Inc. to sell 16 Abbreviated New Drug Approvals (ANDAs) and 6 filed ANDAs. For its portion, Akorn, Inc. will receive $35 million in cash. Akorn-Strides LLC will continue to manufacture and distribute the approved products until April 30, 2011.

Hana Biosciences Inc.,, today announced complete data from its pivotal, Phase 2 RALLY clinical trial for Marqibo® (vincristine sulfate liposome injection) for the treatment of relapsed/refractory adult Philadelphia chromosome-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Results from the RALLY trial demonstrated compelling evidence of single-agent, anti-leukemic activity in an advanced, heavily pre-treated, adult ALL population.
According to a study by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, education is the best defense against obesity.
