When it comes to public perception about health disparities in the United States, political ideology plays a surprisingly large role - more so even than party affiliation, according to new research by a Michigan State University sociologist.
The Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE) meeting this week in Kigali, Rwanda "will provide a forum for experts, government ministers, regional economic communities and other stakeholders to discuss how best to handle the food security issue in" East Africa, New Times/allAfrica.com reports. The U.N. Economic Commission for Africa's Sub-Regional Office, East Africa (SRO-EA) will host the meeting. "East Africa is the sub-region most affected by food insecurity," according to an SRO-EA report, New Times/allAfrica.com writes (3/13).
In order to provide the most effective treatments for cancer patients, it is essential to develop methods of sensitive and specific early detection of the disease. A team of scientists from the NIBRT Dublin-Oxford Glycobiology Laboratory at UCD has developed a system which aims to pinpoint potential "biomarkers" of early forms of the disease.
Minister of International Cooperation, Beverley Oda, has announced $75 million in new funding for the work of the Micronutrient Initiative to expand innovative nutrition programming and strengthen African health systems. The investment will be spread over five years and is expected to benefit 4 million pregnant women and 14 million children under the age of five - particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.
