UH researchers report new gut–liver drug recycling process

A team of University of Houston pharmaceutical researchers is reporting a newly recognized process of drug metabolism in the intestines - followed by recycling through the liver - that could have important implications for developing treatments for intestinal diseases and for taking multiple medications at the same time.

Numerate collaborates with Intellikine to identify drug-like inhibitors of PI3 kinase alpha

Numerate, Inc. and Intellikine, Inc. today announced the successful conclusion of their research collaboration to discover novel small molecule compounds targeting the PI3K/mTOR signaling pathway. The collaboration combined Intellikine's unique capabilities in x-ray crystal structure-guided medicinal chemistry and drug discovery with Numerate's powerful computational drug design platform to identify potent, selective and drug-like inhibitors of PI3 kinase alpha, an important target in cancer therapy.

Mitoxantrone drug users more likely to develop colorectal cancer

The multiple sclerosis (MS) drug mitoxantrone may be associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer, according to a study published in the May 11, 2016, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Mitoxantrone suppresses the immune system.

Study suggests that fluid, sodium restrictions have no effect on weight loss in ADHF patients

A clinical trial of 75 patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure suggests that aggressive fluid and sodium restriction has no effect on weight loss or clinical stability at three days but was associated with an increase in perceived thirst, according to a study published Online First by JAMA Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.
