World Vision has signed an agreement with Air Serv International to provide one light aircraft to transport people and cargo (14,000 lbs capacity) between Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince. The first flights began today, making two rotations per day. According to relief staff, these flights will radically improve transports of staff and goods.
Drugmaker Merck announced it is closing eight research centers and eight manufacturing plants and laying off 15,000 people from its worldwide operations during the next two years because of its merger with Schering-Plough. "The restructuring is expected to save $2.7 billion to $3.1 billion in 2012, the company said. Meanwhile, the pretax cost of the initial phase of the cost-cutting program is expected to range from $3.5 billion to $4.3 billion, much of it in severance packages for employees."
"Off label" drugs are medications that have not been tested for safety or efficacy for a specific patient age or condition. New research presented Oct. 21 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans found that off-label treatments were ordered for 96 percent of all pediatric patients, and 100 percent of patients ages 13-17, in the intensive care unit of an urban children's hospital.
Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on innovative oncology therapies, today announced that it has entered into a committed equity financing facility under which it may sell up to $20 million of its registered common stock to Commerce Court Small Cap Value Fund, Ltd. over an approximately 18-month period. Poniard is not obligated to utilize any of the facility and remains free to enter into other financing transactions.
