Venture capitalists and Wall Street have invested millions of dollars to capitalize on the health care industry's burgeoning demand for information technology. But in New York State, the push to automate the Medicaid enrollment process is being led not by a behemoth IT corporation, but by a tiny not-for-profit: the Hudson Center for Health Equity & Quality (Hudson Center). And 2012 is shaping up to be its breakout year.
The widespread misconception that there are no proven treatments for Ebola virus disease has meant that simple treatments – especially intravenous fluids and electrolytes, which could reduce the number of deaths caused by the virus – have been neglected, according to a new Comment, published in The Lancet.
One of the problems facing medical practitioners in emerging countries is the shortage of basic health infrastructures for effectively diagnosing diseases and administering treatments. SANAR, an online platform developed by Albert Moreira, a Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Facultad de Informática PhD student, aims to solve this problem. SANAR will improve information exchange among medical practitioners from different parts of the globe.
To expand and speed the development of new drugs for its patients, Mayo Clinic has entered a formal collaboration with Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. Under the agreement, Mayo's discoveries of potential drug targets will be the basis for the development of new drug screening platforms. This will allow future work that focuses on high-throughput screening and medicinal chemistry at Sanford-Burnham facilities.
For the first time in three decades, the nation - and most states - saw a two-year decline in preterm birth rates, indicating that strategies implemented over the past seven years have begun to pay off, according to the March of Dimes.
