All of us, at times, ruminate or brood on a problem in order to make the best possible decision in a complex situation. Such is the case in depression, where non-productive ruminations are a common and distressing symptom of the disorder.
Diabetics can face a five times increase in the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) than non-diabetics. This leads to a seven to ten year reduction in life expectancy and a higher probability of suffering a fatal heart attack. These sad statistics have prompted the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2010 by emphasising the simple measures that diabetes patients should adopt to slow-down the progression of CVD and greatly improve their quality of life.
While this isn't the fountain of youth, scientists may have improved healing in our joints - even in areas that become weaker as we grow older.
A team of researchers from the University of Virginia, USA, used single-virus fusion experiments with exogenously controlled proteases to investigate the mechanism of activation directly. They found that the subcellular location of entry depends on the protease activity of the various components, and parallel pathways are possible.
