A major international study collating and analyzing worldwide data on diabetes since 1980 has found that the number of adults with the disease reached 347 million in 2008, more than double the number in 1980. The research, published today in The Lancet, reveals that the prevalence of diabetes has risen or at best remained unchanged in virtually every part of the world over the last three decades.
The Endocrine Society's publishing imprint Endocrine Press released its first original title, Endocrine and Metabolic Medical Emergencies, today during the Society's annual meeting, ICE/ENDO 2014.
U.S. health officials say many young gay and bisexual men who are HIV-positive are unaware they have the virus.
A gene linked to emphysema also can be a factor for developing lung cancer unrelated to cigarette smoking, UT Southwestern Medical Center research indicates. Smoking was the only known risk factor previously associated with both diseases.
