For women undergoing breast cancer surgery, a technique called lipofilling—using the patient's own fat cells to optimize the results of breast reconstruction—does not increase the risk of recurrent breast cancer, reports a study in the February issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Rural Coloradans often have to travel dozens — if not hundreds — of miles to see a doctor when they're ill. The Denver Post reports that "(i)t's a problem that worsens every year — and something rural health advocates are hoping national reform will fix. The major goal of reform is to add some 47 million uninsured Americans, including about 800,000 Coloradans, to the ranks of the insured."
USAID "is distributing 'hygiene kits' at a Syrian refugee camp as part of a $385 million effort to help those affected by the country's ongoing civil war, according to a statement published on the U.S. Embassy's website Thursday," The Hill's "Blog Briefing Room" reports.
A new therapy that involves engineered gut bacteria may one day help reduce the health problems that come with obesity. Incorporating the engineered bacteria into the guts of mice both kept them from gaining weight and protected them against some of the negative health effects of obesity.
