Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute scientists have discovered a new molecule that forms when certain white blood cells-macrophages-are stimulated in response to pathogens.
Technology developed by scientists at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute could halve the time it takes to diagnose tuberculosis infection, and also tell doctors in a day or two whether the bacteria are drug resistant - a process that currently takes weeks. Initial tests of the device were recently described in Scientific Reports, a Nature online journal.
More than 60 percent of breast cancer cases involve defects in the same biochemical chain of events within cancer cells- known as the PI3 kinase (PI3K) pathway-but efforts to develop therapies targeting this pathway have met with little success after hundreds of mostly failed clinical trials. And researchers still don't understand why.
Diabetes mellitus and gout are ranked among the most common metabolic disorders in Western industrialised countries: According to figures published by the World Health Organization (WHO), around 60 million Europeans suffer from diabetes (2) and 18 million Europeans suffer from gout (3).
Pharmaceutical companies are showing "greater accountability in the boardroom today over access to medicines, with more openness, targets and investment in drugs relevant to the poor," but they "show no evidence that they adequately supervise the conduct of outsourced clinical drug trials, according to a new analysis released on Wednesday," the Financial Times reports.
