At the September meeting of the Los Angeles County Personal Assistance Services Council (PASC), officials from the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) announced that nearly 40,000 Los Angeles County seniors and people living with disabilities who rely on the State's In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program for vital care will either lose all or some of their care hours due to State budget cuts.
Maxim Health Systems has cancelled all flu shot clinics at retail locations after October 22, due to lack of vaccine availability. Across the country, there has been a drastic increase in both demand and media attention regarding influenza and vaccine availability. While the nation is experiencing an increase in demand for flu vaccine, manufacturers are unable to produce more seasonal flu vaccine because all resources have been shifted to H1N1 production.
A recently identified immune cell that directs other cells to fight infection plays a critical role in regulating the immune system in both health and disease. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have discovered how a stimulatory molecule and a protein found on the membrane of another immune cell make T helper 17 cells multi-taskers of sorts. Th17 cells protect the body against infection and cancer, but are also culprits in some autoimmune diseases and out-of-control, cancerous cell growth.
Since its approval in 2011, the multiple sclerosis drug fingolimod (Gilenya) has already undergone three early benefit assessments, all of which were mainly based on the approval study TRANSFORMS. After a new modification of the therapeutic indication by the regulatory authorities, the Federal Joint Committee again commissioned the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care to examine the added benefit of the drug in accordance with the Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products.
