Electrodes operated into the brain are today used in research and to treat diseases such as Parkinson's. However, their use has been limited by their size. At Lund University in Sweden, researchers have, for the first time, succeeded in implanting an ultrathin nanowire-based electrode and capturing signals from the nerve cells in the brain of a laboratory animal.
Vitamin B12 is vital for cell division, the synthesis of red blood cells and the functioning of the nervous system. Unable to produce the vitamin itself, the human body has to obtain it via animal proteins. So far it has been known that on its way into the cell vitamin B12 is absorbed by little organelles, so-called lysosomes. From there, the vitamin enters the cell interior with the aid of the transport protein CblF, which was discovered by the same research team three years ago.
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have compared how well different Alzheimer's biomarkers predict the progression of the disease and its effect on memory.
TVA Medical, Inc., announced clinical trial results from a prospective, multicenter clinical study evaluating the everlinQ endoAVF System. This innovative medical technology creates hemodialysis access using vascular sites not traditionally used by surgeons for people with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD).
It is the first time that a scientific study associates high polyphenols intake with a 30% reduction in mortality in older adults. The research, published on Journal of Nutrition, is the first to evaluate the total dietary polyphenol intake by using a nutritional biomarker and not only a food frequency questionnaire.
