Miami, Hartford and Indianapolis ranked at the top in Press Ganey's annual report on patient satisfaction in hospital emergency departments. A survey of more than 1.6 million patients treated at 1,908 hospitals nationwide between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010 gauged their experiences and how satisfied they were with the treatment they received in the emergency department.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota have identified a newly emerging illness, named staphylococcal purpura fulminans. The disease begins as a respiratory tract infection, which then is infected by Staphylococcus aureus.
A post-mortem study of the hearts of 21 young people in Mexico City has found that the heart begins to show the adverse effects of air pollution at a young age and that tiny bits of inactivated bacteria that hitch a ride on pollutants may make the problem worse.
