Although tuberculosis (TB) is commonly thought of as being a disease that mainly affects nineteenth century poets and Victor Hugo characters, it is still the second-most common cause of mortality from an infectious disease in the world, killing nearly three people every minute. Every March 24, on World TB Day, the global health community recognizes the work of Robert Koch, who announced on that date in 1882 his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB.
People who take regular exercise could reduce their risk of developing around two dozen physical and mental health conditions including some cancers and dementia and slow down how quickly their body deteriorates as they age.
A new surgical procedure that has improved eyesight in people who have severe nearsightedness and face a dearth of treatments has made its way to western New York.
A new study says that even when people survive a toxic encounter with carbon monoxide,the damaged heart muscle leaves them at risk of death years later.
Many preventive measures for cognitive decline and for preventing Alzheimer's disease-mental stimulation, exercise, and a variety of dietary supplements-have been studied over the years.
