The U.S. FDA has approved a new treatment for people with worsening symptoms of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD affects smokers and the elderly and leads to severe difficulty in breathing, chronic cough and excessive mucus production. An exacerbation can last up to several weeks and result in a decline in lung function and increased risk of death, and it may be associated with severe anxiety, the FDA says.

Aflac Incorporated today reported its fourth quarter results. Reflecting the weaker yen/dollar exchange rate, revenues rose 6.6% to $6.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared with $6.0 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011. Net earnings were $581 million, or $1.24 per diluted share, compared with $538 million, or $1.15 per share, a year ago.
Research led by Dr. Suresh Alahari, the Fred Brazda Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans and its Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, details exactly how the Her2 cancer gene promotes the progression and spread of breast cancer cells.
