A study by a University of Illinois Chicago pediatric dentist has shown a novel way to track potential COVID-19 cases - testing children who visit the dentist. The study also showed an over 2% positivity rate for the asymptomatic children tested.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) awarded three-year grants totaling $4.5 million to support research in three centers that will focus on improving clinical preventive services and practices such as screening, counseling and use of preventive medications for patients.
The team of scientists based in Edinburgh, Oxford and London were developing a treatment which involves putting genes into the lungs of patients suffering the fatal, inherited wasting disease, passed early clinical trials in 2010. But the recession badly affected the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the charity that had funded the programme, and work had to stop last year just as the consortium was closing in on its goal.
Long before humans figured out how to create colors, nature had already perfected the process - think stunning, bright butterfly wings of many different hues, for example. Now scientists are tapping into those secrets to develop a more environmentally friendly way to make colored plastics. Their paper on using structure - or the shapes and architectures of materials - rather than dyes, to produce color appears in the ACS journal Nano Letters.
