Individuals who practice religion and spirituality report better physical and mental health than those who do not. To better understand this relationship and how spirituality/religion can be used for coping with significant health issues, University of Missouri researchers are examining what aspects of religion are most beneficial and for what populations.
In this post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Gary Darmstadt, head of the family health division of the foundation, family planning expert Monica Kerrigan, and Wendy Prosser, a research analyst with the foundation's family health division, examine global initiatives "launched in recent months and years" that bring "needed attention to women's and children's health," including "the Muskoka Initiative, Every Woman Every Child, the Child Survival Promise to Keep, and the Millennium Development Goals."
When the heart is stopped and restarted, the patient's life may be saved but the brain is often permanently damaged. Therapeutic hypothermia, a treatment in which the patient's body temperature is lowered and maintained several degrees below normal for a period of time, has been shown to mitigate these harmful effects and improve survival in adults.
The Minister of State for Health, Simon Burns MPs, is welcoming the major international lung disease conference COPD8 to Birmingham on June 20th as clinicians, researchers and politicians turn their minds to the growing issue of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) for healthcare systems and wider society.
