A group of physicians in Palm Beach and Broward counties working under a new Medicare pay-for-performance program qualified for a $4.2 million bonus from the government this year for reducing costs while meeting health care quality benchmarks during their first year in the program. Accountable Care Options, the physician's group, is participating in the Medicare Share Savings Program, which encourages hospitals and doctors to hit certain health care standards designed to lower costs in the long run by reducing medical complications and trips to the emergency room.
CytoSen Therapeutics, a private biopharmaceutical company accelerating innovation in Natural Killer cell therapy, today announced it has received a favorable response from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to its pre-Investigational New Drug meeting package for the proposed Phase 2 trial of CytoSen's adoptive NK cell therapy, CSTD002-NK, for the reduction of relapse in high risk acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome in patients undergoing haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
A major new study titled "Pandemics Depress the Economy, Public Health Interventions Do Not: Evidence from the 1918 Flu," by MIT economist Emil Verner and others, and published as a working paper in the Social Science Research Network, puts the role of public health measures and financial welfare during public health crises into perspective.

There has been little research on the mechanism of action of "magic mushrooms" on the brain. A growing number of studies suggested that perhaps the mushrooms' key ingredient could work magic for certain mental disorders. New research in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences sheds light on why one of the mushrooms' hallucinogenic chemical compounds, psilocybin, may hold promise for the treatment of depression.
