Cangene Corporation today reports that it has been advised by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that Cangene has been eliminated from the competitive range with respect to its bid on a contract for developing a treatment for acute radiation syndrome.
Eventually, colon cancers bleed and so tests for blood in stool seem an inexpensive and noninvasive alternative to traditional colonoscopies. In fact, a recent article in the journal Cancer Prevention Research showed that fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) is an accurate predictor of colorectal cancer and can provide a low-cost screening alternative for medically underserved populations.
Building upon the momentum and success of its rapidly growing single-incision laparoscopic surgery program, Saint Louis University Hospital recently performed one of the first total abdominal colectomies, including reconstruction of the intestinal tract by reconnection of the remaining small intestine to the rectum, via single-incision laparoscopy.
A startup created by Purdue University professors is developing a sensor that can detect dangerous mosquito-borne tropical diseases faster and at a lower cost than current methods, giving health officials time to take action before the viruses are transmitted to humans.
