Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University have engineered a tethered ribosome that works nearly as well as the authentic cellular component, or organelle, that produces all the proteins and enzymes within the cell. The engineered ribosome may enable the production of new drugs and next-generation biomaterials and lead to a better understanding of how ribosomes function.
Scientific Laboratory Supplies and Eppendorf have been chosen to provide ultra-low temperature freezers for the country's supply of COVID-19 vaccines.
Sometimes bigger isn't better. Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River National Laboratory have successfully shown that they can replace useful little particles of monosodium titanate (MST) with even tinier nano-sized particles, making them even more useful for a variety of applications.
"Stress won't cause stomach ulcers, but it can make them worse," says Dr. David Graham, professor of medicine and molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. "Stress causes the body to produce higher amounts of acid, which can irritate preexisting ulcers."
Women who have eggs that cannot mature will not become pregnant, and they cannot be helped by in vitro fertilization (IVF). Now researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have identified a molecule called Cdk1 that has an important function for mammalian egg maturation. In the future this could lead to an increased rate of successful IVF.
