New guidelines, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee outline steps to eliminate bloodstream infections in patients with intravenous catheters, which are among the most deadly and costly healthcare-associated infections.
Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced updated results from the Phase 2b 003-A1 study of single-agent carfilzomib, a next generation proteasome inhibitor, in patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma. Carfilzomib achieved a clinical benefit rate (CBR) (minimal response or greater) in the study population of 37 percent with a duration of response (DOR) of 8.3 months.
Use of a common antibiotic may be undercutting its utility as a first-line defense against drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Fluoroquinolones are the most commonly prescribed class of antibiotics in the U.S. and are used to fight a number of different infections such as sinusitis and pneumonia. They are also an effective first line of defense against TB infections that show drug resistance. New research shows, however, that widespread general use of fluoroquinolones may be creating a strain of fluoroquinolone-resistant TB.
Since the approval of four cholinesterase inhibitors in the 1990s and memantine in 2003, there have been no new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, a condition that currently affects more than 35 million people worldwide.
