Viruses attack specific host cells, which can cause chaos in the body. The novel coronavirus, now called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2 for short, infects respiratory epithelial cells in the lining of the lung, causing difficulty of breathing. The usual cause of death of those who contract the virus is pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Now, a new study has found that SARS-CoV-2 specifically attack certain progenitor cells called bronchial transient secretory cells in the lungs.
An international team of scientists has announced a new advance in the ability to target and destroy certain cancer cells. A group led by the University of Leicester has shown that particular cancer cells are especially sensitive to a protein called p21. This protein usually forces normal and cancer cells to stop dividing but it was recently shown that in some cases it can also kill cancer cells.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has scheduled its fourth orphan drug designation workshop for academics, biotechnology companies, and those unfamiliar with the process for Feb. 28 – March 1, 2011, in Claremont, Calif. in collaboration with Keck Graduate Institute.
A study conducted by researchers based in Italy suggests that SARS-CoV-2 induces durable and strong immunity in patients who had moderate to severe COVID-19.
