DaVinci Biosciences LLC, of Costa Mesa, CA, announced today the presentation of their safety and feasibility study demonstrating the administration of autologous bone marrow derived stem cells for the treatment of acute and chronic spinal cord injury at Neuroscience 2009, Society for Neuroscience's 39th Annual Meeting, to be held at McCormick Convention Center in Chicago, IL.
Ember Therapeutics, Inc., a privately held, New York-based biopharmaceutical company that is developing targeted therapies for osteoarthritis, kidney fibrosis, and other indications using Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP)-7, announced today initial results from the Phase II(a) trial of local BMP-7 administration in patients with moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.
An international team of scientists including researchers at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and the University of Southern California found that an enzyme commonly used as a target for antidepressants may also promote prostate cancer growth.
Epileptic seizures are the most dramatic and prominent aspect of the "alcohol withdrawal syndrome" that occurs when a person abruptly stops a long-term or chronic drinking habit. Researchers have shown that the flow of calcium ions into brain cells via voltage-gated calcium channels plays an important role in the generation of alcohol withdrawal seizures, because blocking this flow suppresses these seizures.

The pharmaceutical industry's system for researching and developing medicines is not always delivering the drugs, vaccines and diagnostics needed.
