A biology lab at Washington University has just cracked the structure and function of a protein that plays a key role in the life of a parasite that killed 655,000 people in 2010.
A staggering 230 million antidepressant prescriptions are filled each year. Yet the face of depression does not always fit the mold: a successful career, loving spouse, wonderful children, seemingly good health and finances. From the outside life appears perfect, so why are Americans depressed?
Given that cancer is a disease caused by gene mutations, cancer researchers have been striving to develop gene therapies aimed at correcting these mutations. However, these efforts have been hobbled by the difficulty in safely and efficiently delivering anticancer genes to tumors. Nanoparticles, however, may solve these delivery issues, and two recently published studies, using two different types of nanoparticles, lend credence to that hypothesis.
Shimmer recently supported a project undertaken by Donovan Faraoni, a Grade 10 student at Bishop's College School, Québec, Canada. Donovan's experiment focused on how mixed reality technologies will soon blend virtual elements seamlessly into our everyday lives, making it critical to understand potential underlying differences in our perceptions of virtual reality.
