In this post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Max Kamin-Cross, a self-proclaimed political junky and youth activist, writes that by improving access to contraceptives, "we could lift millions of people of all races and both genders out of poverty throughout the world," "we could significantly decrease the number of premature deaths, as well as the number of lives claimed by deadly infections like HIV," and "the quality of life for millions more people would be drastically improved."
Reuters: The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPac) on Monday issued nonbinding recommendations that Medicare "cut U.S. government payments to private insurers and home healthcare providers." The panel, which is an independent body set up to advise Congress on Medicare, "repeated its earlier call for the federal government to pay private insurers that offer coverage known as Medicare Advantage the same as it pays when Medicare reimburses providers directly."
Cognitive neuroscientists Rosie Cowell and David Huber at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently received a four-year, $2.36 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a new computational tool that will help researchers in interpreting functional magnetic resonance images of the brain and improve accuracy in relating fMRI data to neural responses in the brain.
Obstructed defecation syndrome represents a widespread clinical problem which frequently affects middle-aged females. Nevertheless, many of the previously established techniques are unsuitable for patients with ODS associated with simultaneous rectocele and rectal intussusception. Notably, STARR has been proposed as an alternative operation and a relatively noninvasive surgical technique for this difficult problem.
BioScale Inc., a privately-held life science company that develops, manufactures and promotes a new generation of protein analytics technology, today announced that it has secured $25 million in its recent financing round. Led by new investor Morningside Venture, this round will be used to expand manufacturing operations and commercial sales of the ViBE protein analytics systems.
