Phico Therapeutics, a biotechnology company developing a novel platform technology for a new generation of antibiotics aimed at overcoming antibacterial resistance, has been awarded a £2.25M Translation Award by the Wellcome Trust to develop its SASPject PT4 antibiotic, aimed at Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
After nearly two decades of unsuccessful attempts, researchers from the University of Chicago Medicine and the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have created the first mouse model for the most common form of infant leukemia.
NeuroDerm, Ltd. was informed today that it was awarded a grant of $1M by The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. These funds will support the next clinical study with ND0611, a new dermal patch for the treatment of Parkinson's disease, as part of the Foundation's prestigious Clinical Intervention Awards 2010 program. This study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, levodopa pharmacokinetics, and possible clinical benefits of ND0611 in advanced Parkinson's disease patients.
Receiving an organ low in weight in relation to the recipient's body weight increases kidney transplant recipients risk of complications and transplant failure, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The results suggest that compatibility between a donated kidney's weight and the weight of the recipient could improve the success of transplantation.
Scientists funded by the National Eye Institute report a novel gene therapy that halts vision loss in a canine model of a blinding condition called autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP). The strategy could one day be used to slow or prevent vision loss in people with the disease. NEI is part of the National Institutes of Health.
