A study by the University of Birmingham has shown that children who have experienced child abuse or neglect are four times more likely to develop serious mental illness such as psychoses, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
A Viewpoint in this week's issue of THE LANCET addresses the state of primary-care research worldwide. Primary care includes the medical services provided by general practitioners (family physicians) and internists, with the aims of providing patients with a broad range of health care over a period of time and coordinating the care the patient receives.
A closer examination of these health plans (to be offered on the California and Oregon exchanges) reveals a less rosy picture. Although the premiums are lower than some anticipated, this has been achieved by designing the plans around much more limited provider networks and including greater cost-sharing than the typical commercial health-insurance plan. The premiums for the policies that will be offered on the states' exchanges are much higher than analogous plans being sold today (Daniel P. Kessler, 6/3).
It is well known that the lack of physical activity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, but what part does it play in retinal vascular caliber? A team of researchers examined the association of physical activity and television viewing time with retinal vascular caliber and explored the differences in white, black, Hispanic and Chinese racial/ethnic groups.
