Driving a car is a key factor in independent living and life satisfaction for older adults. In the U.S., driving is considered an important aspect of personal freedom and gives people a sense of control over their lives. Most adults continue to drive as they age-in fact, 81 percent of people aged 65 and older hold a driver's license in this country.
Inserting a "shield" of cartilage into the inner ear is a less invasive and more cost-effective alternative to membrane reconstruction when treating hearing loss in selected patients suffering from chronic middle ear infections (otitis media), according to a new study published in the June 2007 edition of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery .
A 10-year study of more than 1,200 patients with low-risk papillary microcarcinoma (PMC) of the thyroid led researchers to conclude that close and continuous monitoring is an acceptable first-line approach to patient management instead of immediate surgery to remove the tumor.
Researchers at the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences have put forward the viewpoint for the first time that adaptive functional evolution may occur in the leptin protein of the pika (Ochotona) family, a typical cold-adaptive mammal.
BMA Northern Ireland Chairman, Dr Brian Patterson, in his speech yesterday, 29 June 2005, to the annual BMA conference in Manchester, said that whilst the Northern Ireland Assembly remained suspended health services suffered. "This is due largely to the lack of local accountability by politicians, civil servants and managers".
