About 1 billion people around the world suffer from hypertension. The molecular mechanisms of this disease, its diagnosis and treatment will be the focus of a lecture series at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. The talks will take place from Monday, May 26 through Wednesday, April 28 in room 304C of the Anaheim Convention Center.
In one of the first studies of its kind, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing researchers have identified what cancer patients consider the "benefits and burdens" of participating in clinical research trials.
With the discovery of antibiotics, medicine acquired power on a scale never before possible to protect health, save lives, and reduce suffering caused by certain bacteria. But the power of antibiotics is now under siege because some virulent infections no longer respond to antibiotic drugs.
Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Monash University, and Virginia Tech have used a set of novel inhibitors to analyze how the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, uses enzymes to chew up human hemoglobin from host red blood cells as a food source.
Today, the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet, has issued a special series of articles focused on emerging zoonoses (human diseases that originate in or are shared with animals).
