Jordan Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the opening of its new, state-of-the-art Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center located on the hospital campus in Plymouth, Mass. The Wound Center features the only hospital-based hyperbaric treatment chamber in the greater Plymouth and Cape Cod region. The new Wound Center provides individuals with chronic, non-healing wounds, a local option for wound care and hyperbaric therapy.
Researchers for the first time have shown that members of a family of enzymes known as cathepsins - which are implicated in many disease processes - may attack one another instead of the bodily proteins they normally degrade. Dubbed "cathepsin cannibalism," the phenomenon may help explain problems with drugs that have been developed to inhibit the effects of these powerful proteases.
Depending on the age of asthmatic children, on their exposure to molds or dampness in their bedroom, and on the severity of their asthma, vitamin C has greater or smaller beneficial effect against asthma, according to a study published in the Clinical and Translational Allergy.
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a method for analysing MR images in just a few minutes when diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. The accuracy of the analysis is comparable to manual measurements made by skilled professionals, which are currently considered the most reliable method for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. The accurate and rapid analysis method is well suited for clinical use.
A team of scientists at GE Global Research, the technology development arm for the GE, has launched a study with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, (MSKCC) one of the world's premier cancer centers, to better understand the early stages of colon cancer. The goal is to yield new insights that improve treatment selection and outcomes for cancer patients in the future.
