If a cervical smear test reveals abnormal cells the woman will be offered colposcopy, a technique that involves a doctor studying the cervix with a special microscope.
Developing brains in newborns have a sizable pool of a certain type of immature progenitor cell that can be expanded and induced to replace cells lost to brain injury.
The Association of Rehabilitation Nurses is pleased to announce the availability of the eagerly awaited The Specialty Practice of Rehabilitation Nursing: A Core Curriculum, 7th Edition. The Core Curriculum serves as the foundation for the rehabilitation nursing profession and can be applied to the many diverse settings and roles, including acute rehabilitation, post-acute care, community settings, skilled nursing homes, case management, research facilities, consulting academia, and clinics.
In a new study published in the Jan. 25 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the researchers demonstrated that the technique works by incorporating it into a specially designed virus. The virus eradicated prostate cancer cells in the lab and in animals while leaving normal cells unscathed.
It all started with a single toe. Even today, Dr. Susan Harkema recalls the words spoken by one of the research participants: "Look Susie, I can move my toe." The patient's name was Rob Summers and he was completely paralyzed from the neck down. After a car accident he was told he would never be able to walk again.
