Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, found that an electrical current can be used to orchestrate the flow of a group of cells, an achievement that could establish the basis for more controlled forms of tissue engineering and for potential applications such as "smart bandages" that use electrical stimulation to help heal wounds.
The "paltry scale of the Pentagon's reconstruction endeavor [in Haiti] - 1.6 million people displaced and the American military is contributing a few classrooms? - is emblematic of the international response," columnist Dana Milbank writes in a Washington Post opinion piece.
In a new paper published Feb. 4 in JAMA, Mayo Clinic researchers describe the benefits of in-home noninvasive ventilation therapy- which includes a type referred to as bilevel positive airway pressure, or BiPAP- for many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
