Healthcare workers on intensive care units are regularly missing opportunities to clean their hands during the care of patients, despite its critical importance for infection control, according to new research being presented at this year's European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases in Amsterdam, Netherlands (13-16 April).
New research provides early evidence that 'good' cholesterol may possess anti-aneurysm forming properties. In laboratory-based investigations, scientists found that increased levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), the so-called good cholesterol, blocked the development of aneurysms - dangerous 'ballooning' in the wall of a blood vessel - in the body's largest artery, the aorta.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have found that preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who receive high-quality early intervention benefit developmentally regardless of the treatment model used - a surprising result that may have important implications for special-education programs and school classrooms across the country.
Major amputation is often selected over infrainguinal bypass in patients with severe systemic comorbidities because of a presumed decrease in risk of perioperative morbidity and mortality. To investigate this presumption, researchers from the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston undertook a risk-adjusted comparison of early postoperative morbidity and mortality of high-risk patients undergoing infrainguinal bypass and major amputation.
New research by a team of scientists at University Hospital RWTH Aachen in Germany and Erasmus Medical Centre in The Netherlands characterized changes in CD8+ T cells in response to SARS-CoV-2.
