A University of British Columbia geneticist has discovered a gene mutation that can cause the most common eye cancer - uveal melanoma.
APC Microbiome Ireland scientists based at University College Cork have shown for the first time that a high fat "western" diet reduces the efficiency of the immune system to fight infectious disease particularly in the gut, and to infection with the foodborne pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes.
A new study that recently appeared on the preprint server medRxiv* makes use of a combined method to estimate population exposure to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), taking into account the fact that patients who recover from the infection often do not have circulating antibodies against the virus.
UCSF researchers have discovered that a protein called B1N1 is necessary for the heart to contract. The findings, published in the Feb. 16 issue of the open access journal PLoS Biology, shed light not only on what makes a heart beat but also on heart failure, a disease where cardiac cells are no longer able to contract and pump blood through the body.
Two new studies shows a definite link between migraine and menstruation. Approximately half of all women who seek clinical treatment for migraines have reported an association between migraine and menstruation, and a recent study by the City of London Migraine Clinic confirms their experience.
