Researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah have discovered that a protein, zyxin, is necessary for the maintenance and repair of the cell's cytoskeleton, or internal framework, which serves as the muscle and bone of the cell. The research has implications for cancer, as well as other diseases, since alterations in the cytoskeleton are often associated with disease. The research was published in the Sep. 14, 2010, issue of the journal Developmental Cell.
Research has been ongoing in the field of genetic mutations and changes and brain and other neural disorders including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and a new study in mice models of autism has shown a possible link between mutations or deletions of the SHANK3 gene and a rare disorder called Phelan-McDermid syndrome and ASD.
Researchers in Manchester have this week launched an innovative new project working with patients and their families to better understand the causes of rheumatoid arthritis.
The Texas Department on Aging has officially launching a "Texas Cares" website - http://www.txcares.org - to help older Texans and people with disabilities get information that may help them obtain their prescription drugs.
