Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. Current treatments are focused on suppression of the immune system, but these therapies can leave patients vulnerable to infection.
The Lupus Foundation of America seeks grant applications from medical researchers to help advance the understanding of lupus nephritis, a serious and life-threatening complication of lupus that can affect as many as 40 percent of all people with lupus, and two-thirds of children with the disease.
