Optimism surrounding the science of HIV treatment and prevention "is tempered by less auspicious trends, particularly shrinking budgets for global health in the U.S. and around the world," Victoria Fan, Amanda Glassman, and Rachel Silverman of the Center for Global Development (CGD) write in the center's "Global Health Policy" blog.
In a paper published January 31 in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) reveal how antipsychotic drugs interfere with normal metabolism by activating a protein called SMAD3, an important part of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) pathway.
"An outbreak of dengue fever across much of Latin America has killed 31 people since the start of the year and is showing no sign of relenting," Agence France-Presse/News 24 reports in a piece that notes the recent increase in dengue cases in the region over the past few years. Since the start of the year, "nearly 46,600 confirmed or suspected cases have been detected in the region, according to an AFP tally based on official figures," the news service reports.
